Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari told reporters that during the first day of Velayat-94 naval drills underway in Konarak waters, Chabahar in the southeast waters in the Sea of Oman, his forces had issued warnings to a US destroyer and its accompanying flight unit to keep the safe distance from the drill zone.
The warning was issued according to standards of launching any military drills in water where the artillery is fired to keep the passing ships, destroyers, commercial cruisers, and oil tankers; “the Navy should have cleared the drill zone according to international conventions of holding of a naval drill,” said Sayyari. “We predicted that US destroyer(s) would come to the vicinity of the drill zone to collect intelligence related to the drill, so the first warning was issued by Alborz Destroyer demanding that the US destroyer keep safe distance from the tactical zone, to which they responded with going farther away in compliance with the maritime conventions ruling the conduct of the ships behaving in the sea,” he detailed.
“Security of passing destroyers, commercial ships, and other cruisers is important to the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Army Navy and we will strictly prevent any sort of ship from entering the drill zone,” said the commander.
Velayat-94 Naval Drill was launched Wednesday morning and will be active until February 1 in an area limited to Sea of Oman, northern Indian Ocean and 10th Parallel north.
